The following information addresses privacy as it relates to users of this website.

The Knowledge Institute on Child and Youth Mental Health and Addictions (the Knowledge Institute) is committed to protecting the privacy of all visitors to our website, subscribers to our newsletter and any others providing contact information. We value your trust and understand that this requires that we be transparent and accountable about how we handle the information you choose to share with us.

Information we collect and how we use it

We only collect information that you provide voluntarily. Personal information (including name, street address, telephone number, screen name and email address) is not collected from use of this site unless specifically and clearly requested (as in the case of newsletter registration or contact forms).

Personal information collected by the Knowledge Institute is used only for the purpose for which it is collected (to distribute the newsletter, to respond to inquiries or to monitor website statistics) unless you specifically agree to the use of personal information for additional purposes.

Electronic (email) newsletter

The Knowledge Institute provides you with the opportunity to receive communications from us in the form of newsletters or event information. We request the following information from anyone signing up for our free email newsletter: name, email address and organization. An email address is required in order to receive the newsletter.

We rely on a third-party service, Mailchimp, to collect contact information and distribute our newsletters. Due to Canadian anti-spam legislation, you must opt in to the newsletter in order to receive it. If you have opted in and later desire to opt out from further receiving our email newsletters, you can make this change at any time by clicking on the unsubscribe URL embedded in the email or newsletter, or by contacting us.

Contact forms

Our contact forms request full name, email address and comments or questions from anyone attempting to contact the Knowledge Institute. This information is required for the purposes of providing feedback or answering questions. Email communications that you send to us vial the email links on our site may be shared with the appropriate Knowledge Institute staff to address your inquiry. We make every effort to respond in a timely fashion once communications are received.

Once we have responded to your communication, it is discarded or archived, depending on the nature of the inquiry. The email functionality on our site does not provide a completely secure and confidential means of communication. It is possible that your email communication may be accessed or viewed by another internet user while in transit to us. If you wish to keep your communication private, do not use the email function on the site.

Website analytics and cookies

Our web servers automatically collect standard internet log information (internet protocol, or IP, address and browser type) and details of visitor behaviour patterns (page views, duration of visit) when individuals visit our website. This information is processed in a way that does not identify the user. Rather, it is used in an aggregate form to understand how our site is used and how we can better serve visitors. We rely on a third-party tool, Google Analytics, to evaluate use of the site and website activity.

Like many websites, the site uses digital cookies to gather trend data concerning traffic on the site for statistical analysis. These are small pieces of information that are stored on hard drives of your computer, which allow us to “remember” information about your preferences and allow you to move within areas of our site quickly and easily. You can choose to accept or decline cookies. Most web browsers automatically accept cookies, but you can usually modify your browser settings to decline cookies if you prefer. This may prevent you from taking full advantage of the site.

We do not share, rent or sell personal information

The Knowledge Institute will not share, rent or sell your personally identifiable information with any third parties. Additionally, any personal information you provide is stored in a secure location accessible only by designated staff. Only those staff members directly involved in in distributing the electronic newsletter, responding to contact requests or preparing website analytics have access to this information.

Legal disclaimer

We may disclose personal information when required by law or in the good-faith belief that such action is necessary in order to conform to the edicts of the law or comply with a legal process served on our site.
